Maximizing Your Employment Potential

Finding a job is a lot like selling yourself the same way a company would sell a product. Most people don’t want to look at themselves in an objectifying manner, but the reality is that most companies look at their employees as tools for profit, and you need to sell yourself as such. There are two steps that everyone knows takes place in order to find employment: resume submissions and interviews. Both are important, but require different strategies if you want to achieve success.
The resume is the biggest hurdle to getting in the door at any business. If at all possible, you will likely have much more success networking amongst former colleagues and friends than submitting resumes, but sometimes you simply don’t have that option. A resume should be spelling and grammar error free, use concise but informative sentences, and use strong language emphasizing your skills and talents. Don’t include things on a resume that would have little value to the company you are applying to. Tailor your resume to the company so that they know you are specifically interested in their position and not just resume dumping all over the place.
Once you get your foot in the door at a company things get a little less complicated. By this point you have already stood out of the crowd and shown you can be a potential asset to the company. The interview is the time to show your interpersonal skills. Keep eye contact and focus on your interview. Use a strong handshake, proper posture and dress appropriately so that you look professional and courteous. Most of all, prepare. There are plenty guides on the internet to common interview questions. “What are your weaknesses and strengths,” is a question almost guaranteed to be asked.

Don’t Worry, Be Happy

In the current economic climate, it can be easy to let your worries get the best of you, especially if you are looking for jobs in San Diego. Read our tips for keeping your worries at bay and you will be better equipped to embrace new business opportunities.
  • It’s easy to worry about job security in an uncertain economy, and that fear is sure to heighten if a coworker is laid off or you have been laid off before. Avoid stressing yourself out by staying grounded in your daily tasks, but look ahead by working to increase your value in your current position so if layoffs happen you will feel more secure.
  • Worrying about your health and the health of your family is intensified if you don’t have health insurance. While you can’t control certain aspects of your health, improving your diet, exercising regularly and exhibiting other healthy habits are within your control.
  • Money is a worry for nearly everyone these days, especially when unexpected bills arise due to an unanticipated hospital visit or job loss. If your family was worried about money you are more likely to worry too, so be conscious of that—and if you associate money with security and respect. Ease your worries by sticking to a budget and really thinking about what money symbolizes to you.

Don’t Let the News Get You Down

When it comes to business news these days, the words “high” and “unemployment” are frequently paired together and splashed across the front page of newspapers and websites. The poor state of the economy and statistics about unemployment can make the search for jobs in San Diego or elsewhere more than a little discouraging, but there are ways to find success!
New York Times bestselling author and internationally recognized expert in personal and professional development Peggy McColl recently shared her list of 8 ways you could be blocking your own success with the Huffington Post. Here are some steps to follow to make sure you aren’t hindering your success:
    1.       Feel the goal you want to achieve and imagine what it would feel like when you have achieved it.
    2.       Have faith. If you don’t have faith, you won’t be able to move yourself towards your own goals.
    3.       Focus on what you want instead of fearing what you don’t want.
    4.       Believe that you deserve to get the job, the promotion or whatever it may be. It sound simple, but it helps.
    5.       Take action! Begin by researching your goal online. Each morning, ask yourself: “What small step will I take towards achieving my goal today?” Each night, ask yourself: “What did I today to move closer to my goal?”
    6.       Have faith and move towards your goal even if you don’t exactly know how you will achieve it.
    7.       Don’t allow fear to consume you.
    8.       And last, but not least, don’t give up!

    Make Your Clients Love You

Getting new clients might be the first thing on your mind, but once you have clients, you’ll want to keep them. Lucky for you, we can help you keep clients so that business growth in San Diego becomes a reality. Read our tips for making your clients adore you and your company.
    ·         Deliver on time, every time. If there is a problem with a client, address how you are going to deal with it immediately.
    ·         Don’t assume that you know what customers want. Many new businesses fail because they incorrectly assume what customers want, don’t make that mistake. Do your research!
    ·         Plan, design and execute your loyalty plan in a systemized way.
    ·         It may sound obvious, but say “thank you.” Better yet, make it your policy to send handwritten thank you notes.
    ·         Conduct periodic training sessions with your staff to ensure that they know how to interact with clients.
    ·         Stay connected to your customers. Consider an “opt-in” message so you can gradually develop a relationship with your customers.
    ·         Make sure that longstanding and current customers get VIP treatment. Sure, getting new clients is important, but you don’t want to lose the ones you have.
